BOOK REVIEW BY TINA DIETZ

Berry Hill Quilts
Friend-to-Friend Quilts and More!
Quilting the Seasons With Pat Sloan
Three books by Pat Sloan

Having paged through our latest editions to our LQG library, Pat Sloan's Berry Hill Quilts, Friend-to-Friend Quilts and More!, and Quilting the Seasons With Pat Sloan, I am so tempted to sum them up with the words "WOW!" and "AWESOME!" But even if I could get away with that, which I doubt, those two phrases would still be inadequate descriptions of these three books which are filled with such quilting riches. Many of you are already acquainted with and impressed by Pat Sloan's thinking outside the box style. For those of you who aren't, let me try to gather it in by saying it's "Folk life festive with a bold, charming twist," and that as you check out her books you are in for a real treat!

All three of Sloan's books offer projects with her large motifs, vibrant colors and playful layouts. Berry Hill Quilts contains six easy applique projects for smaller wall quilts and a table runner. Quilt the Seasons with Pat Sloan holds 10 delightful projects for small, seasonal wall quilts and a penny rug, and includes quilts for the Fourth of July and Christmas as well as Spring, Summer, and Fall. Friend-to-Friend Quilts and More! has 12 projects ranging in size from large quilts and wall hangings to tote bags, eyeglass cases, book covers, pincushions, and even tea towels and a chatelaine. If you've been looking for som! e extra special but easy-to-make ideas for Christmas presents, look no farther than Friend-to-Friend Quilts and More! In fact, among the three books you should be able to find ample ideas to please nearly everyone on your Christmas list!

Each book has the fabric requirements, and full-size patterns for all of the projects in the book, and section of general instructions in the back. For those who have a little quilting knowledge behind them and the well-seasoned quilters the projects will be a delight to make, and beginners might especially enjoy making a few of the smaller projects on their way to gaining more quilting experience. Even if you don't have time to take on any new projects right now, treat yourself to a little time to look through Pat Sloan's books and observe how she handles her borders and maximizes her backgrounds as well as her foregrounds in her quilt designs. All of her works are a wonder and pleasure to behold. If you've been wanting to be challenged to try something new and to start "thinking outside the box" with your quilts, Berry Hill Quilts, Friend-to-Friend Quilts and More!, and Quilting the Seasons would be a great place to start.
